Portrait of Cornelis van der Geest (1577-1638) by Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). An Antwerp merchant and Maecenas, nearly three-quarter length, head turned to the left, in dark cloack, with white collar, loose cloack over his left shoulder, his right hand resting on his left wrist - on panel 8.75 in. x 6.5 in. Provenance: Sir Peter lely; sale, 18th April 1682 "Item. Thirty -Seven Pictures done in Grisaille done by Vandike after the life of the most eminent men in his time, from which the plates were graven" (ii125 to Ralph, 1st Duke of Montagu) Engraved: by L. Vosterman. Four other sketches entered the collection at a later date. A duplicate of M.200 (ref: at base of picture frame). Four other sketches entered the collection at later dates. This and the majority of the follwing sketches are portraits by Sir Anthony Van Dyck of artists and distinguised persons, painted in grisaille, for engravers to work from. The collection of 100 prints were published in 1645 with the title: "ICONES PRINCIPUM VIRORUM, DOCTORUM, PICTORUM, ETC. ... AB ANTONIO VAN DYCK PICTORE AD VIVUM EXPRESSAE EIUSQ> SUMPTIBUS AERI INCISAE".
