Carved Overmantel

 The carved stone overmantel in the Little Hall traces Ralph Montagu's ancestors back to William I.

It was probably inspired by the painted stone overmantel now in the Flower Gallery Bedroom, which may have been at Barnwell in the 1st Duke's time. It is likely to have been commissioned by Ralph, 1st Duke of Montagu as the shields at the bottom of the heraldic tree record his marriages to Elizabeth Wriothesley, Countess of Northumberland in 1673 and Elizabeth, Duchess of Albemarle in 1692.
