Sir William Drury (1527 - 79)

Attributed to George Gower (fl. 1540?-d. 1596), c.1570-75

Sir William was the son of Sir Robert Drury of Hedgerly, Buckinghamshire, and Elizabeth, daughter of Edmund Brudenell (information from Charles Scott's notebooks, vol. 14, p.62). He became Govenor of Berwick and Lord Justice to the Council in Ireland. Several versions and copies of this portrait, attributable to Elizabeth I's Serjeant Painter Gower, are known, including a head and shoulders copy in the National Portrait Gallery.
