Painting - Edward Montagu
Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu of Boughton (c. 1562 - 1644)
Artist unknown, 1630s
oil on canvas 109.9 x 92.1 cm

Edward was the son of Sir Edward Montagu of Boughton, whom he succeeded in 1602. He was created KB at the coronation of James 1, and Baron, 1621. As an MP he moved the resolution to keep the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot as a festival. He was captured and imprisoned in the Tower by Parliament in 1642, and died in the Savoy while still a prisoner. This portrait, of which at least one other version is known, has sometimes been wrongly attributed to Daniel Mytens.

PROVENANCE by descent from the sitter.
