Lady Elizabeth was the only daughter of George Montagu, Duke of Montagu and 4th Earl of Cardigan. This portrait was painted in Bath at about the time of her marriage in 1767 to Henry, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch. A drawing, probably from the same sitting, is in a private collection (Hayes, 1970 (43)).
