Painting - Frances Brudenell
Frances Brudenell, Countess of Newburgh (c. 1673-1736)
Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723), signed, c. 1694-95
oil on canvas, 123.8 x 99.1cm

The sitter was the daughter of Francis Brudenell, styled Lord Brudenell, and married Charles, 2nd Earl of Newburgh in 1692. He died on 6 April 1694, and this portrait, which commemorates her widowhood, was presumably painted before her remarriage in May 1695 to the 3rd Baron Bellew of Duleek.

PROVENANCE perhaps passed to the 3rd Earl of Cardigan; thence by descent
