Son of General Edward Montagu, George was a close friend and correspondent of Horace Walpole. Inscribed on the verso of this portrait is: 'Vanloo pinxit Georgii Montagu 1739'. A variant copy by Eccardt was at Strawberry Hill (Mellon Collection). Another copy, in a feigned oval, is at Farmington, Connecticut.
