Painting - A Family watching Harvesters

A Family watching Harvesters, with a distant view of Het Steen, Vilvoerde

David Teniers the Younger (1610-90)

oil on canvas, 144 x 177cm

The attribution of this handsome, comparatively sober example of Teniers's work has never been in question. Rubens's country house near Malines appears in the far right background.

A Memorandum in French of pictures for sale c.1746 mentions '26 Un tableau de David Teniers representant une Moisson, Livres 1600'. At this high price it was bought by the 2nd Duke of Montagu. His Accounts for Prints and Graving for 17 November 1746 show a payment to Joseph Sympson, Printseller, 'for Teniers Family, 6s'.

On MHW3, List B, c. 1770 this picture was entitled 'D. Teniers Himself & Family in a Landscape'. On fol. 5 of Envelope 'C' it was valued at £74.

PROVENANCE acquired by John, 2nd Duke of Montagu, c. 1746; thence by descent.
