The attribution of this handsome, comparatively sober example ofTeniers's work has never been in question. Rubens's country housenear Malines appears in the far right background.
A Memorandum in French of pictures for sale c.1746 mentions '26 Untableau de David Teniers representant une Moisson, Livres 1600'. Atthis high price it was bought by the 2nd Duke of Montagu. HisAccounts for Prints and Graving for 17 November 1746 show a paymentto Joseph Sympson, Printseller, 'for Teniers Family, 6s'.
On MHW3, List B, c. 1770 this picture was entitled 'D. TeniersHimself & Family in a Landscape'. On fol. 5 of Envelope 'C' itwas valued at £74.
