As a younger son he had to make his own way in the world, until his elder brother,Edward, was killed while serving in the Second Dutch War. William III restored him to the Privy Council in February 1689, to the Mastership of the Great Wardrobe, and made him an Earl in April. King William made him Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire in 1697. He gained the title of Duke of Montagu in 1705 by Queen Anne.
