A larger, more detailed version of the view, likewise presumablycommissioned by the 2nd Duke (Montagu House being his favouriteresidence), of a sketch which is signed and dated 'S. Scott 1749'.Scott was influenced by the Van der Heyden paintings in the Duke'scollection, rather than by Canaletto.

PROVENANCE almost certainly painted for John, 2nd Duke of Montagu;bequeathed by his widow in 1775 to their daughter Elizabeth, whomarried Henry, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch; thence by descent.
