Throughout Boughton there are representations of both the family that lived here in the Tudor period and most of the Kings and Queens who ruled the nation in that period.
They include Henry VIII, his Lord Chief Justice Sir Edward Montagu, who purchased the House and who was a commissioner of Henry VIIIs will. Edward VI is also portrayed at Boughton as is Queen Elizabeth and Mary Queen of Scotts.
With Elizabeth in the Great Hall are portraits of Her Maid of Honour, Elizabeth Vernon, Countess of Southampton and her husband, the Earl of Southampton, patron of Shakespeare. There are many depictions of family member from the Tudor period, particularly in the Egyptian Hall
This can be a useful resource for schools who can come to Boughton to study the Tudor period. The photographs shown depict a local school, Rothwell Junior, doing this.
In this instance, the school spread its visit over several days, although each class received the same experience. The children were first taken on a tour of part of the House, to look at the Tudor paintings, how the people dressed, together with examples of furniture from that period.
The students were then able to spend some time sketching the Tudor pieces they had seen. The day served as part of the childrens introduction to the Tudors and examples of the fine work they produced can be seen here.
