The Grand Etang
|
|
This large rectangular basin represents a major piece of earthworks. It was possibly constructed to provide the head of water for fountains in the formal gardens or perhaps a water garden itself. The source of water was a small stream which flowed from the North East, the remnants which are still visible in the park The area has been dry for many years and has on occasion been the setting for various events from Girl Guide meetings to Dog trials. However over the last few years the Grand Etang has been restored to its former state through the action of the British weather if only temporally. The photo above shows it full of water on the morning of the 16th November 2000 after heavy rain had brought the stream (see below) back with a vengeance across the park. |
