Benvenuto Tisi called 'Il Garofalo' (1481-1559)
oil on panel
(86 x 64cm)

The attribution is traditional and indubitable. This is one of the finest and best preserved examples of Garofalo's achievements on an intimate scale, both in the sensitive composition of the figure group and in the marvelously atmospheric landscape.

Numbered fol. 5, envelope B in the undated list of pictures at Old Montagu House, Whitehall c. 1770, Benvenuto Garofalo The Virgin, Our Savior & St Catherine', valued at £38. Bought from Jenkens in Rome, 1758 by Lord Brudenell (later Marquis of Monthermer).
