Rainbow Room

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries this was a dining room but today is primarily a room for display due to the fragility of many of the contents, not least the early
16th century Isfahan carpet

The Bacchanalian Children Tapestries are Flemish, 1660-70.

The central writing table is by A. C. Boulle and may have been presented to Ralph Montagu when he was Ambassador in Paris by
Louis XIV, whose portrait by Claude Le Febvre surmounts it.

The pair of Meissen swans by J. J. Kaendler were made for Madame de Pompadour, 1747, the gilt bronze ormolu mounts by Jean-Claude Duplessis were added slightly later c.1750. The Boulle kneehole writing tables in red tortoiseshell and brass are Louis XIV period; one bears a miniature portrait of Marie Antoinette by Nicolas Lavreince the Younger (1737-1807). All the chairs, c. 1685 still have their original coverings and are outstanding examples of English furniture of that period. The Sèvres porcelain bears date marks for 1753-62.

The Régence Boulle Bracket Clock is by Gloria of Rouen. The pair of dolphin tables, and the mirrors between the windows, are c. 1730.

The drawing of
Mary, wife of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch is by her sister-in-law, Molly Bishop (Lady George Scott). The full length sketch of
Margaret, wife of the 7th Duke of Buccleuch, by Ellis Roberts, is for a portrait at Bowhill.
