One of five identical square pieces with outward-facing borders. Hefford (May 1983) suggested these were more likely used on a string of pack-animals than on beds or tables. In the borders are arms of Ralph Montagu's parents and of his first wife, Elizabeth Wriothesley, indicating a date after June 1673 (V & A, 1914). Arms in the centre, Montagu quartering Monthermer, are shown to be Ralph Montagu's by monograms angled in the corners: chaplets of flowers suggest the tapestries were woven before he became a baron. Earl's coronets were added later, inserted in some pieces; here applied with warp at right angles to that in the tapestry.
BORDER Arms of Montagu impaling Winwood, Montagu impaling Wriothesley flanked by Montagu griffins, acanthus and garlands; Monthermer eagles in the corners.
PROVENANCE woven for Ralph Montagu, probably for his embassy to France in 1676 of 1677. Possibly later used as hangings in the rooms of his daughter and granddaughter at Bouthton.
