Hilt, Scottish, c. 1690; blade, probably German, dated 1662.
Overall length, 37.75 in (95.9 cm), length of blade 32.12 in (81.6 cm)
Iron hilt, consisting of a domed pommel and a basket of fully developed Highland type with fluted bars of rectangular section, and with the edges of the main knuckleguard, the side-guards, and the shields cusped and crenelated. The piercing includes 'hearts' made up of three holes, two round and one rectangular.
Curved, single-edged blade with two full-length fullers. Etched in line, with traces of gilding in the lines, with mottoes, military trophies, symbolic figures, a lion rampant, and 'Anno Domine 1662'.
The basket is typologically early in that it is steeply canted in relation to the main axis of the sword, has a very small opening for the hand, and has no wrist-guard. A closely comparable hilt is illustrated in Medina's portrait of Archibald Campbell, 1st Duke of Argyll, painted about 1690, at Inveraray.
