John [?] weesop (fl. c. 1640-50), early 1640s

oil on canvas, 144.8 x 213.4cm

This Van Dyckian group is a rare documented work by the obscure Netherlandish artist Weesop, who is said to have come to England in 1641. The sitters (probably a boy and a girl) have so far defied satisfactory identification, but are presumably ancestors of the Brudenells.

PROVENANCE 3rd Earl of Cardigan; thence by descent.
