PURPOSE OF VISIT:

This is a unique educational opportunity for children to view and study all aspects of the operation of a large modern Estate - farming, forestry, gamekeeping, landscape conservation, wildlife and maintenance.  To act as a preliminary visit for extended study at other times throughout the year. Further details from the Trust.

VISITORS:

The event is open to all schoolchildren, although the day is most suitable for children aged 11 and under.

CHARGE:

£2.00 per child.  We do not make a charge for Teachers and accompanying adult helpers.  This nominal charge is made as a contribution towards the costs of the Estate Open Days.

SIZE OF GROUP:

There is no restriction on the size of groups accepted, as long as the adult supervision is adequate.

TEACHERS IN
ATTENDANCE:

There should be at least one teacher for every 10 pupils. Additional adult help is advisable.

DURATION OF VISIT:

There are sufficient attractions to occupy school groups for most of the day; it will take about four hours to see all the displays.  Additional time may be required for a lunch break and visiting the gift shop.

THE TRAIL:

Teachers are expected to lead their groups.  The displays and demonstrations will be linked by a signposted trail about 2 miles in length.  On a warm day, this may be a strenuous visit for the younger age groups.

TIME OF ARRIVAL:

In order to reduce congestion, teachers are asked to select their half hour of arrival: 9.00-9.30, 9.30-10.00, 10.00-10.30, 10.30 - 11.00 am.  (Late applicants may be asked to change time of arrival.)

AGE GROUPS:

The event is designed for students aged 11 or under.
It is very important that older students are under supervision and do not dominate exhibitions or stands to the detriment of younger visitors.

WEATHER:

These are outdoor events, and there will be no covered accommodation in the event of poor weather. Visitors should come prepared with waterproof clothing and stout waterproof footwear.

LUNCH BREAK:

Teachers may prefer to return to the Boughton House where a lawn, free from livestock, has been allocated for use at lunchtime and which is also close to the toilets, first aid post and gift shop.  Please ensure all hands are washed before eating. If coaches are hired for the complete day, this enables lunches to be kept safely, and to provide shelter in wet weather.

SHOP:

The Gift Shop in the Stable Yard at Boughton House sells a wide range of affordable souvenirs and other goods.

TRANSPORT:

Schools are expected to make their own travel arrangements. Please inform the driver that he will need a packed lunch if remaining at the Estate, as there are no special refreshment facilities for drivers.

BRIEFING FOR
TEACHERS:

It is considered important that at least one teacher from each school attends the briefing session. This will be held in the Stable Block at Boughton House on Tuesday April 5th at 4.30pm and will last about 1.5 hours. Coffee and biscuits will be served before walking the route for which outdoor clothing and stout footwear is advisable. If you can not make the briefing meeting or would like to come and discuss the day on your own, please contact the Trust office to arrange a mutually convenient day. Maps and additional information will be provided on this day or by email.

BOOKING:

In the past, demand for the visits has been considerable. It is essential to register your interest in a visit by telephoning 01536 515731 or by e-mailing blht@boughtonhouse.org.uk, and filling in the attached booking form.

PAYMENT:

We will invoice you for the entry charges (£2.00 per child - no charge for Adults) - this can be made on the day or by return.

PLAY AREA:

Following an inspection and written report by ROSPA, the Playarea was closed and removed at substantial cost to the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust. The paramount concern must be the continued safety of our visitors, large and small, and consequently we consider that we have made the right decision but of course regret any inconvenience this may cause.
