In 1994 Boughton House received the SILVER AWARD in the first ever Historic Houses Association Awards. The Criteria for the award are: "The house which best preserves its character, its authenticity and integrity in terms of architecture, furniture and contents, but which, most importantly, remains a lived-in family home with all the atmosphere and appeal that implies".

Today the Estate is renowned as a model of enlightened rural land management.

Public access to the Boughton Estate is now administered by the Living Landscape Trust, set up by the 9th Duke of Buccleuch and the then Earl of Dalkeith (now the 10th Duke of Buccleuch) in 1986 and representing a continuity of their commitment to conserve the British countryside. The Trust aims to provide information about the countryside, the necessary work that goes on there, and its conservation, to a public that is becoming ever more aware of environmental issues and dangers.

This work continues the traditions of a rural estate - under on family's stewardship for almost 500 years - in preserving its identity as part of the national heritage whilst demonstrating its operation to a wider audience.
