Grafton Village

The village is referred to in the Domesday Book as Grastone, the name derived from Old English meaning "homestead inthe Grove".

The 'Underwood' was added in the 18th century, and possibly relates to the nearby Grafton Park Wood, which is a part of old Rockingham Forest. The deer park, created in 1343 by Sir Simon Simeon, Lord of the Manor, was to ensure a regular supply of venison for hunting.

There are around 50 cottages in the village, some of which are thatched and others with Collyweston slate and pantiles. Most of the cottages are original dwellings, but now there are more homes converted from old stone barns belonging to the farms in the village.

Ducks on the stream A stream with several small bridges (18th and 19th century) runs parallel with the road and many ducks have made this area their home.

Until fairly recently virtually the whole village was owned by the Duke of Buccleuch, but many of the cottages are now privately owned.

Grafton Underwood has been made famous by Helen Fielding in her books 'Bridget Jones' Diary' and 'Beyond the Edge of Reason', as the place where Bridget was bought up and her parents reside.
