>> A tour of Little Oakley

Church of St PeterThe village may seem sleepy, but it has had it’s share of excitement in the past.

During the reign of Elizabeth I, in 1582, a group of 15 men from Boughton, Brigstock and Weekley caused a riot in Little Oakley church. With the aid of a blacksmith and armed with swards and staves, they broke into the church, where, following a fight, one local man was killed and another was injured.

The apparent reason for the fracas was a dispute between William Montagu, the new lord of the manor, and a new priest appointed by the crown. The group of men were supposedly acting on behalf of the priest.

Manor FarmA pleasant walk from Manor Farm (left of the church), crossing meadows, styles and gates and passing under the old viaduct, will take you to Great Oakley. A black/white arrow marker on a fence of the farm, near the bridge, indicates the beginning of the walk.

There are also uphill walks to Geddington and Newton, these can be difficult at times, but waymarkers indicate the routes.
